It’s a story you won’t read in your local newspaper…
Fed up with the political stalemate that's choking Washington, Congressman Tim Murphy and a bipartisan group of legislators last Wednesday introduced a comprehensive plan to address rising gas prices and move the country toward energy independence.
The legislation was a result of placing the public’s interest before that of political parties and special interests. For over a month, the rank-and-file members of the newly-formed Energy Working Group have been discussing the best ways to move the country toward energy independence.
“While gas prices have soared, Congress has been caught up in partisan fighting, raising taxes, and raising Cain, but not raising one drop of oil,” said Congressman Murphy. “American families can’t afford to keep paying more for gas. They can’t afford to keep paying more for electricity. They can’t afford to keep paying more for food.”
Rather than import oil from foreign countries like Iran and Venezuela, Congressman Murphy wants to put Americans to work by drilling for American oil and natural gas. Every day, Americans send over $700 million to OPEC. That’s money that can’t be spent on hybrid vehicles and energy-efficient appliances.
Under this proposal, the federal government could reap $2.6 trillion in royalty payments from offshore drilling. A sizable portion of that money would be invested in wind energy, biofiuels, and clean-coal technology projects.
Congressman Murphy praised his fellow lawmakers for their willingness to compromise for the benefit of the American people.
“What we have accomplished shows the tremendous opportunity Congress has to improve the lives of American households when we put party identification aside, roll up our sleeves, and work together for the American people.”
