Far Left Isn't Sitting Back - Neither Should We!

Thank you, and thanks to the tens of thousands of voters who cast a ballot for my candidacy yesterday. It is very humbling for my family and I, and the entire team at Murphy for Congress. We greatly appreciate your support and will not let you down. Today marks the official start of our general election campaign, and we're anxious to get started!

Lessons Learned - Far Left Will Do What it Takes to Maintain Power

The lessons learned from yesterday are important as we look towards November. This will be an election year like no other. It is clear that the far-left isn't sitting back this election cycle, and neither should we. Those holding power in Washington will do whatever it takes, and spend whatever it takes, to maintain control and protect the success of their leftward shift on major issues like health care, spending and government interference in every space of our lives. We saw this movement in action yesterday with the liberal surge for Joe Sestak toppling Democrat Arlen Specter in an intra-party battle.

It's even getting personal. For the first time in all my years in public service, I was ambushed outside of my own polling place at 7:45am by a group handing out attack pamphlets, yelling and filming all the while. There is no doubt about it, this will be a rough and tumble campaign because the stakes are so high and maintaining power is their goal.

Should the far left succeed this fall, it will mean more of the same policies we've seen over the past 18 months, which are built on a philosophy that the government can make better decisions for you and spend your money better than you can.

Change Isn't Automatic

Given yesterday's results, we can't underestimate the opposition this year even though the public is turning away from their far-reaching agenda, or expect that a change in leadership will automatically happen. America is clearly against the agenda of the far left that's left us with bailouts, takeovers and handouts. Poll after poll tells us that. But those in power aren't listening, so we have to work hard and fight back.

This fall, we are facing an opponent in the 18th district who would rubber-stamp this entire big-government agenda. On health care, he supports the massive government-run system signed into law in March. He supports the higher tax and spending agenda of current Washington leadership and even opposes expanding our regional natural gas economy. Without this industry, we will lose thousands of regional jobs. The bottom-line? We simply cannot have another candidate in the House supporting this out-of-touch agenda.

I have a different outlook. I believe we must reduce, not increase, federal spending. We have to grow jobs in our area by cultivating our domestic energy resources (coal, natural gas, nuclear). We must reform health care the right way by cutting hundreds of billions of dollars wasted each year in our health care system, and invest in improving access and delivery of care.

Should we continue on our current path, we will see more spending, higher taxes, and more debt. Just last week, the Treasury Department announced it will post a whopping $83 billion monthly budget deficit, creating the largest April budget deficit in US history (normally April is a surplus month due to tax returns). The April 2010 monthly deficit was also 4 times the size of last year's April budget deficit. With a total of $800 billion in debt racked up - and counting - since October 1st, America is on course to hit an all time high of $1.56 trillion in new debt by the end of the fiscal year. The sheer size of these deficits have never been seen before in our history.
